2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Follows Lukewarm Response
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a distinct game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now refining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
The news echoes a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the complete text from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After a period of conversations, he officially joins us on next week.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having devoted the recent years developing and leading some of the most popular titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
The President
