Mystery Magenta Ooze on Secluded Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Anxiety of Potential Algae Outbreak
Authorities in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algal bloom.
Extensive Appearance Along Shore
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a portion of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the city. A similar sludge has also been recorded on areas of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Collected for Testing
Samples have been gathered and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A official remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in response to changes in nutrients, warmth, rain or sunlight".
"These blooms are occasionally called red or pink tides because the outbreaks can change the water red," the representative said. "Few algal blooms are dangerous, with many species serving as a primary source of food for marine life in the marine food web."
"The usual source of crimson tides in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."

The expert stated this organism did not generate toxins comparable to the species involved in South Australia's harmful algal bloom, but it does ingest tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning marine life were particularly vulnerable.
"You usually see a proliferation of sea sparkle after a proliferation of a different species, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Demands for Response and Safety Concerns
A campaigner, who took samples of the rosy slime in the state, said it looked like the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and indicated the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, referring to similar cases elsewhere.
"So the state needs to send a clear message here, the authorities and the regulators need to react to this. We need to examine the specimens we've taken and we need to put word out the community here," she said.
The scientist stated she had worries for public safety after feeling a numbness along her arms and face while being sprayed with tainted seawater.

An environmental foundation has stated deceased sea creatures and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a veteran activist calling the event as an "natural disaster" and demanding the state premier to inspect and "lead the reaction that authorities must be doing".
